Emma Brittian - Locust Street Art

Emma Brittain is the Executive Director of Locust Street Art and a Buffalo-based ceramicist, interdisciplinary artist, and teaching artist who advances accessible, community-centered arts education. Her personal work explores relationships between people and the natural world, grounded in the interdependence that connects us all. At Locust Street Art, she brings that same belief in connection to hands-on learning that supports people of all ages and abilities in developing their creative voice.

Founded in 1959 by Molly Bethel and later shaped alongside Olga Lownie through the MollyOlga Neighborhood Art Classes, Locust Street Art grew from neighborhood “painting parties” into a longstanding Fruit Belt arts institution. Today, it continues its commitment to removing financial barriers to quality arts education through free, individualized studio classes with materials included, as well as low-cost specialized workshops and custom services. This work connects directly to the social determinant of health known as Education Access and Quality, which recognizes that equitable, high-quality learning opportunities support lifelong well-being.

For this feature, Fokus’d Kreatives Apprentices researched Locust Street Art and developed questions exploring how the organization elevates educational access and opportunity on Buffalo’s East Side. They also coordinated pre-production logistics and communication with Emma, prepared the interview, and assisted with production on the day of filming.

Locust Street Art elevates joy on Buffalo’s East Side by making room for people to create, explore, and be recognized for their own ideas in a welcoming community setting. Its free, individualized art classes and one-on-one mentorship give students of all ages the tools, materials, and encouragement to build skills, express themselves, and connect with others through art.

This work also strengthens the social determinant of health known as Education Access and Quality. By removing cost barriers and offering high-quality, responsive arts instruction, Locust Street Art expands meaningful learning opportunities in the Fruit Belt and supports the conditions that help individuals and communities thrive. Education access and quality is recognized as a key contributor to health, well-being, and quality of life.
